Can you make a symbolic product?

Hello and welcome!

In week one back to university we discussed what makes up the creative industries, is it just music and art or is it deeper than that? In the 2010 report from UNCTAD it said that there are three things that define the creative industries.

1. They have some kind of human creativity and input.

2. They carry a symbolic message.

3. They contain some kind of intellectual property.

If a product, company or idea contains all three of these it is "creative" and a part of the creative industries.

This particular module is all about digital media within the creative industries and different ways to use these to promote a band or artist. So the first challenge of this year was "Can you make a symbolic product?"

Yes!

This image I took uses all three key points to creating a creative product. Firstly, I took the photo therefore there has been some human input, but also the graphic designer who designed the logo for the university. Secondly, it holds a symbolic message as it is recognised as a representation of learning and development to students, lecturers and the general public. Lastly, I took this photo, therefore own the intellectual property that it holds, but within the photo is a second layer whereby the university own the logo, so own the IP.

Therefore, the creative industries is just an umbrella for so many things from music to architecture, and fine art, to gardening because all of these involve human creativity, they carry messages and they belong to the person who created them.
